And yeah, Masu was the sole survivor of a group of 3 in an unarmored desert buggy, when it was hit by an explosive weapon. He was critically injured and not expected to make it.

Due to that, He lost half his tail, his right leg, right eye, and some digits on his right claw and left foot.

Yep heh, same cause as the missing digits on the right hand and left foot, and the missing eye and leg from the knee down on the right leg, rocket propelled grenade detonation.
